School of General Studies
Scope and Contents
The School of General Studies collection contains records of the development of the School including the Provision to create the School, its Articles of Organization and Bylaws, agenda, minutes, and documents from the Council of the School of General Studies meetings, minutes of the Admissions Committee of the School, memoranda, notes, and committee membership roster. In addition, the collection contains a master Notational System of Course Offerings and program and course proposals from various departments. The collection includes records from sub-committees of the School of General Studies such as Committee on Vocational Programs, Language, Communication, and Verbal Skills Study Group, Ad hoc Funding Committee, and the Curriculum Committee. Lastly, the collection houses the Career Opportunities Programs for Students booklets that were kept by the School as a resource for its students.

Biographical or Historical Information
The School of General Studies was developed in 1969 to help categorize the “unclassified” students at Purdue University Calumet. The control of curricula and other academic affairs of the School of General Studies was controlled by the General Studies Faculty Council, which included faculty members from each department within the School. The main purpose of the School of General Studies was to provide post-high school educational opportunities for students whom such opportunities were not available. In addition, the School sought to meet community needs by training personnel in business, industry, government, and human resources development. The School of General Studies was replaces by The Community College once Academic Autonomy was granted to Purdue University Calumet in 1974.
