Biographical or Historical Information

The School of General Studies was dissolved after the Board of Trustees accepted Purdue University Calumet’s Proposal for Academic Autonomy. As a result, The Community College was formed to replace the School of General Studies, but with a different function. The purposes of The Community College were to provide post-high school educational opportunities for students and to meet the community needs for training personnel. Its courses and programs were designed to remove deficiencies and to expand and help students meet their goals. The Community College collaborated with the Center for Community Services by sending students to the Center for outreach work to apply skills from courses they had taken. By 1976, The Community College provided resources through an Advising Center, which provided a student with an academic advisor to help select types and amount of courses to achieve academic success. The Community College did not award degrees since it acted as a preparation school for other schools within Purdue University Calumet. However, during the 1976-1977 school year, The Community College awarded an Associate of Arts in Human Services: Day Care-Child in order for students to fulfill the Indiana State requirements for licensed Day Care Center personnel.                                                                                 The Community College program was offered at Purdue University Calumet until the Fall of 1979, when the Center for Community Services became integrated with General Studies to form the School of General Studies and Community Services.
