School of General Studies and Community Services

The School of General Studies and Community Services at Purdue University Calumet was established in 1979 by combining the Center of Community Services with The Community College. At the time of its inception, the School did not offer degrees, but instead offered degree pathways toward Continuing Education, the Urban Development Institute and the School of General Studies.                                                  The School of General Studies and Community Services continued the practices of The Community College by preparing students for personnel services in the community as well as offering continuing education courses. The design of the School also continued to be a preparation program for student to branch off into other schools within Purdue University Calumet. In January 1986, the Faculty Council of the School of General Studies and Community Services endorsed the proposal to change the name of the School to the School of General Studies. Simultaneously, the Center for Community Services was reinstated to assume the duties of the mission of the School of General Studies and Community Services dealing with community service and outreach.
