Biographical or Historical Information
The School of Liberal Arts and Sciences was established by the fall semester of 1985 after the Purdue University Board of Trustees approved a plan to reorganize the academic structure of the Calumet campus. The mission of the School was to provide a broad, liberal education and career preparation through courses in the humanities, mathematics, physical sciences, natural sciences, and social sciences. At the time of its creation, the School was comprised of eight departments: Behavioral Sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Communication and Creative Arts, English and Philosophy, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History and Political Science, and Mathematical Studies. In addition, the School awarded an Associate of Arts, Associate of Applied Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.
By the fall of 1999, the School changed its title to the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and began overseeing five departments: Behavioral Sciences, Communication and Creative Arts, English and Philosophy, Foreign Languages and Literatures, and History and Political Science.
The School of Liberal Arts and Sciences established a Council comprised of its faculty to review and evaluate curriculum proposals from the School before they are forwarded to the University Senate, study general educational policies within the School, provide criteria and procedures for faculty governance of the School, and make recommendations to the University administration about pending policy decisions that impact School faculty.
