Scope and Contents

The Harold A. Williamson papers contain meeting notes, correspondence, lecture notes, course materials, students’ papers, memoranda, and a memorial. The collection includes Williamson’s notes from the meetings of the General Studies Staff of the Technical Institutes and his correspondence with R. R. Donnelley and Sons Co. regarding evaluations of his classes. The bulk of the collection includes Williamson’s lecture notes and his materials from courses he taught at the Technical Extension Division campuses in Gary, Indiana and Hammond, Indiana from 1943 to 1955. Lastly, the collection includes memoranda kept by Williamson.

Biographical or Historical Information

Harold Arthur Williamson was born in Kansas in 1906. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State Teachers College in 1928 and his Masters of Science degree from Kansas University in 1930. Williamson married Marguerite Akin in 1930. He taught in secondary schools from 1930 to 1946. In 1946, he moved to Hammond, Indiana to work at the Technical Extension Division of Purdue University. By 1948, Williamson was appointed to Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor in 1954.  He taught speech and English classes in both the degree and diploma programs, and he edited the school newspaper. He authored the “Workbook for English Grammar for the Technical Institute” in 1952, which he used in his General Studies 52 English Grammar and Composition course. He was also the designated representative of the Hammond Technical Institute at the meetings of the General Studies Staff of the Technical Institute[s]. In addition to his activities at the Hammond Technical Institute (i.e. Purdue University Calumet), Williamson submitted articles to professional and recreational magazines, including Clearing House and Nations Schools. He also taught special speech classes for a variety of adult civic and industrial groups. Williamson passed away on 25 February 1956 after two months of illness.
