Biographical or Historical Information
The Voluntary Action Center Field Experience Program was established in July 1977 as a result of the research by the Ad hoc Committee on Voluntary Service. The goals of the Center were to provide students with opportunities for enhancing their academic careers by incorporating field experiences, to provide students and faculty with opportunities to make meaningful contributions to the community by volunteering, and to provide faculty with a vehicle for facilitating the incorporation of practical community and job oriented experiences into their course offerings. The School of General Studies and Community Services sponsored the program. A central office was established to coordinate volunteer and field experiences with outside agencies as well as the placement of students in field experiences. By 1979, the sponsorship of the Voluntary Action Center was transferred to the Office of the Dean for Student Development.
