From 1952 to 1955, Elliott worked as an Associate Professor of Psychology at Purdue University Calumet [Campus]. In 1955, he accepted a position at Socony-Mobil Oil Company in New York. Elliott returned to Purdue University Calumet during the summer of 1959 to act as the Director after the death of Millard E. Gyte. He replaced Richard J. Combs, who had been acting as the University’s interim Director. Elliott remained at Purdue University Calumet, for fifteen years, advancing the University in a variety of ways. He administered the change of Purdue Calumet from a two-year “Calumet-Center” feeder program to a regional institution offering four year baccalaureate and graduate degrees. Elliott was instrumental in Purdue University Calumet’s acquisition of Academic Autonomy from West Lafayette in 1974. After Purdue University Calumet received its Academic Autonomy, Elliott was named Chancellor in February. During the summer of 1975, Elliott left Purdue University Calumet and accepted the position of President at Tri-State College [Trine University] in Angola, Indiana.
