Biographical or Historical Information
Richard J. Combs was born in South Dakota and received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and his Master’s in Educational Administration by 1951 at the University of South Dakota. Combs came to Purdue University Calumet in 1955 as a mathematics and physical sciences instructor at the Technical Institute. In 1957, Combs was appointed Assistant Director under Millard E. Gyte. After Gyte’s death in 1958, Combs was appointed interim Director by Dean Charles H. Lawshe. When Carl H. Elliot was appointed Dean and Director of the Calumet campus in 1959, Combs returned to his post of Associate Director. In 1974, Elliot left Purdue University Calumet for another position, and Combs was appointed Chancellor of Purdue University Calumet. Combs served as Chancellor until 1990.
