Biographical or Historical Information

In 1978, the History and Political Science department at Purdue University Calumet recommended the establishment of an institute that would stimulate research and writing about the Calumet Region. Chancellor Richard J. Combs appointed a Regional Studies Institute Study Committee in February 1978 to research the interdepartmental need for such an Institute. By May 1978, the Regional Studies Institute was officially established. The Institute was headed by a Director, guided by a faculty advisory committee appointed by the Chancellor, and sponsored by the Department of History and Political Science. The goal of the Regional Studies Institute was to use the resources of Purdue University Calumet to increase the citizens’ knowledge of the Region’s unique qualities. Its objectives were to encourage the development courses and curricula about the Region, to conduct programs and workshops to educate the public, to found a regional archives, to establish an oral history program, to issue reports and publications about the Region, and to assist in seeking funds and grants to develop and expand programs on the Calumet Region. By 1984, the Institute’s scope and activities had extended well beyond the disciplines of the Department of History and Political Science. In August 1984, the Chancellor announced that the sponsorship of the Regional Studies Institute would be transferred to the School Humanities, Education, and Social Science (HESS). However, by the Fall 1985, the School of Humanities, Education, and Social Science changed to the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). After this change, there is no record of the Regional Studies Institute at Purdue University Calumet.
