Biographical or Historical Information
Prior to the summer of 1968, Purdue University Calumet’s faculty was controlled by the University Senate of Purdue University, West Lafayette. Although ultimate authority was under the control of the West Lafayette Senate, Purdue University Calumet was able to conduct legislative business through its Advisory Committee.
The Council of Faculty Delegates was established on 7 June 1968 when the Board of Trustees approved the Articles of Organization of the Faculty of Purdue University Calumet. The Council of Faculty Delegates was the governing body of the Calumet campus faculty. It exercised the legislative and policy-making powers that were delegated to the Faculty by the University Senate of Purdue University, West Lafayette and the Board of Trustees.
As of 4 May 1998, the Council of Faculty Delegates was dissolved as a result of Purdue University Calumet’s re-organizational restructuring. The Council of Faculty Delegates approved the dissolution through Council Document 98-07. As a new constitution and by-laws were adopted, the powers and responsibilities for faculty governance began to reside with the Purdue University Calumet Faculty Senate, also known as the University Senate of Purdue University Calumet.
The Purdue University Calumet University Senate is composed of the President of the University, the Chancellor of Purdue University Calumet, those members of the administrative staff with academic rank, tenured and tenure-track faculty, and the clinical professional faculty. The Purdue University Calumet Senate is the governing body of the Purdue University Calumet Faculty. It exercises the legislative and policy-making powers that have been delegated to the Faculty by the Board of Trustees. The University Senate has established standing committees to initiate development projects for matters under their purview and to undertake the necessary study and research needed to present such projects to the Senate for further action and implementation. A standing committee can appoint subcommittees, which are responsible to and report to the standing committee. The Senate may establish subordinate committees whose duties, responsibilities, and membership shall be defined by the Senate. The Senate may also create ad hoc committees and other groups and delegate to them specific powers when it judges that such bodies will be beneficial in carrying out the Faculty’s responsibilities.
