Biographical or Historical Information
After the success of many feminist programs and conferences held by Purdue University, Indiana University Northwest, Purdue University Calumet, and several community organizations in the early 1970s, the demand for women’s education grew at Purdue University Calumet. During this time, many married women attended Purdue University Calumet to enhance their education to pursue careers. In conjunction with broad social changes in the United States at the time, Chancellor Richard J. Combs appointed an Ad hoc Study Committee for Women’s Studies in July 1975. The Committee, chaired by English professor, Shirley Staton, proposed an interdisciplinary Women’s Studies minor and helped launch the Women’s Resource Center in 1976. The Program initially offered two courses: GS (i.e. General Studies) 121: Introduction to Women’s Studies, instructed by Pauline Kayes, and GS 265: By and About Women: A Feminist Approach to Literature, instructed by Staton. The program received some criticism in the late 1970s from traditionalists, and as a result, the Women’s Studies Program organized workshops and seminars for enlightenment. By 1987, the Women’s Studies minor became an Associate of Arts degree program with a concentration in Women’s Studies, though students were still able to minor in Women’s Studies.
The mission of the Women’s Studies Program is to offer an academic curriculum informed by feminist theories and special focus on gender issues as they relate to the student’s major field of study. In addition, the Program sponsored activities that addressed the personal, professional, cultural, and educational needs of a diverse population of women, both on the campus and in the community.
