Abstract

This collection includes negatives, writings, photographs, course syllabi, and general post office information. Box 1 contains the original inventory written by Carlisle, negatives, and photos. Boxes 2 through 5 include general post office project information seperated by muralist name. Box 6 is comprised of general post office project information for the state of Texas. Box 7 includes general records surrounding the murals. Box 8 includes courses taught and workshops attended by Carlisle during his time at Purdue Calumet. Books 1-7 are comprised of slides, photos, and negatives created by Carlisle. Included within the collection are 8 metal slide boxes containing slides from Carlisle’s courses and photographs from his Post Office Tour. *Note: See front of binders for Carlisle's original finding aids.

Biographical or Historical Information

John C. Carlisle was a professor of English at Purdue University Calumet, and he dedicated 25 years of his life to studying post office murals around the United States. These murals were created as part of the 1930s Public Works of Art Project, sponsored by the Treasury Department. In 1995, he and photographer Darryl Jones published a field guide entitled "A Simple and Vital Design: The Story of the Indiana Post Office Murals".
