Abstract

In February 1974, Chancellor Carl H. Elliott submitted a proposal to the Board of Trustees of Purdue University for academic autonomy of the Calumet Campus. The proposal included four schools offering degree programs, including the School of Basic and Applied Sciences (SBAS). Purdue University awarded Academic Autonomy to the Calumet Campus, and the School of Basic and Applied Sciences began offering degrees during the 1975-1976 school year. The mission of School of Basic and Applied Sciences was to provide high quality educational programs for students whose interest and aptitudes were based in the broad spectrum of the sciences. The School was organized into eleven departments: Administrative Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Technology, Construction Technology, Electrical Technology, Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, Mathematical Sciences, Nursing, and Physics. The degrees granted by the School of Basic and Applied Sciences included Associate of Applied Science, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science Industrial Management, and Bachelor of Science in Engineering. SBAS also awarded Practical Nursing, Professional Supervision, Practical Industrial Electronics, and Mechanical Instrumentation Systems Program certificates. Because the Graduate School was still under the authority of the West Lafayette Graduate program, SBAS did not offer a degree through the Calumet campus even though there were graduate classes held. The School of Basic and Applied Sciences continued its existence through the 1978-1979 school year, but was dissolved and its degree offerings were split into two separate schools: the School of Engineering Management and Technology and the School of Science and Learning.
